March 2018 - Letters to Our Children

Mason, Rylan, and Elli

We started out this month with another road trip to Florida.  We had a 5 day reunion with college friends to celebrate 10 years since we graduated.  Even with both of you boys having fevers for much of the trip (the whole trip for Mason and half of it for Rylan- 6 days for each of you) we had the best time.  We had 15 kids in the house, and only 3 of them were girls...and Elli was the oldest girl there!  But surprisingly enough, it didn't seem like a madhouse.  The kids got along so well, and it was a really, really great trip.  On the way home we stayed in Knoxville for one night to break up the trip, which made it a little more relaxing.  On the way down we drove the whole thing in one shot!  Oh, and Rylan, your favorite part of the beach house was "your room" which was the big walk-in closet in our room.  Haha!

We got home from the reunion trip just in time to watch the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics.  And even though I like summer Olympics better, Daddy would choose winter, and we loved watching everything we could together.  It was definitely trickier, Mason, with you being in school, but you still got to watch a lot of events.  We even pulled out the couch bed in the living room and had an "Olympics bed" which made watching it even more fun!

We had 2 doctor visits this month (plus 3 other sick times when we didn't go to the doctor and the sicknesses resolved themselves.)  Rylan got strep again and Elli had another ear issue; we were at least able to treat hers with drops instead of an oral antibiotic now, though.  Rylan, I'm scared the antibiotics are trying to take over your little stomach, despite the probiotics and kefir you've been having this whole time.  Mommy and Daddy got fevers/colds this month too, which wasn't fun, but we made it through.

In random news, we found out that Tiptwo is a boy this month!  Kippa is a girl, like we thought.  We're still having a hard time changing our pronouns from "she" to "he."  Also, we spent some time at the rental house this month, trying to get it ready for someone new to move in.

Mason- you lost your first tooth!!  The tooth fairy, who you say is ME, gave you 50 cents, and she will hopefully remember that amount the next time you lose a tooth. ;)   You are also signed up for t-ball, so you have practiced that a couple times with Daddy and with Poppy.

Rylan- you had a little phase in your room this month where you wouldn't sleep during nap (or would fight it forever) and would fight to get out of your room the whole time.  We ended up taking almost everything out of your room, and at this point you just have a mattress on the floor but seem to be loving it.  (I'm glad I got that picture of you in the crib before we took it out.)  Before you know it, you'll be sharing a room with Mason, and Elli will be in your room.  Your current favorite night time song that you request every day is Little Bunny Foo-Foo.

Elli- you are starting to have quite the attitude.  Lately you've decided to be picky about food (so unusual for you!) and just a little moody about everything.  You stomp your foot - a learned response from Ry - when you're mad.  You have even started trying to do it when you're sitting down, but you realize it isn't getting enough emphasis so you stand up just to stomp harder.  Your little attitude reminds me a lot of Rylan at this age.  But in more uplifting news, you're walking now!!  It only took 17 months, but you're pretty good at it.  You also say "uh huh" and nod your head a lot.  To people outside the 5 of us, you seem to say that and agree with others all the time.  It's very cute and funny.  You especially love Daddy and Poppy lately.  You still want Mommy when you're tired, but you seem to be particularly drawn to the two of them at other times.

Here are some quotes from this month:

“I think Kitty pooped in the glitter box!”
— Rylan (meaning litter box....but glitter box sounds way nicer!)
“Mommy, I want you to have that shirt!”
— Rylan, talking about a figure skating costume
“I don’t think the Bible tells us that answer.”
“Can you ask Siri?”
— conversation between me and Rylan
“When’s my birthday?”
“April.....two-th?””
— conversation between me and Mason, when he was guessing my birthday
“Mason, do ninjas really know the whole Bible?”
— Rylan
“It’s so fast!! It can go 37 mours per hour!”
— Rylan

Ok, cuties.  Until next month!

I love you, Mommy

February 2018 - Letters to Our Children

My 3 little Cutenesses,

Every month I really have the intention of keeping this letter short and sweet, but every month I write too much.  I'll try just to hit the highlights this time, though.  We had 2 more cases of strep (once with Mason, once with Rylan) this month, and Elli seemed to have a continual ear infection until we finally got an appointment at a Harrisonburg ENT where they made our case a priority, and she got tubes in her ears in the middle of January.  (Elli, you did great with the anesthesia and the surgery, by the way!  They said you didn't cry at all!)  You're still having trouble with your ears now, since you have a cold, but it's a little less stressful, since I can see the drainage coming out and know which ear is bothering you.

Mostly, we've been having days at home this month.  Grandma came to visit with Aunt RuthE for about an hour one evening, and they ate supper with us.  (They also picked Mason up from school and got some ice cream with him, which he was thrilled about.)

We had a couple days of really warm weather in between the cold, which was beyond wonderful to me.  One of those days it was drizzling, but we still went to the park anyway because the temperature was so nice.  None of you seemed to even notice the rain.  On the other hand, we also had a snow day this month too (actually the day of Elli's surgery).  Daddy and Mason got to have a snowball fight before it all melted.

Mason, you and Mikayah had your ninja classes on Tuesday afternoons this month.  I got to watch one, and it looked like fun!

I got to go to a tea party for all the mommies in Mason's classroom last week, and that made me feel very special.  You were quite the gentleman, Mase.  You also looked so cute singing "I'm a little Teapot."

Clayton, Hollie, and their boys left our church this month to move to Ohio, and we had a going-away evening with them during the last kids lifegroup.  Elli and Elliot, it looks like you'll have to have a long-distance romance.... (Just kidding.  No boyfriends, Elle Belle.)

Mommy got to go to a baby shower for Rochele this month.  We had some yummy food and extra chocolate-y hot chocolate. :)

Oh and a couple quick things that I don't have pictures of, but I want to remember about this month:  Mason, when you count, you say "17, 18, 19, 12, 20...."  I don't know how the 12 sneaks in there every time, but we need to try to get it out now that you're supposed to be counting to 100.  And Elli, when you are saying goodnight, you used to blow kisses, but sometimes when you were tired you would get confused and sort of blow kisses from your forehead.  We thought it was so funny every time it happened, but now it's just the way you say goodnight.  We say "top of the mornin' to ya" when you do it, and it makes everyone laugh.

Here are this month's quotes!

“Mommy, I want to beat you down the stairs cause I feel sick.”
— Rylan
“Well I have ADHESION!!!”
— Rylan, said while talking in a scary voice when we were playing bad guy vs. superhero...really meaning to say "heat vision," like Superman
“Here’s your arrow, but not your bowen!!”
— Rylan, stealing my bow & arrow while playing "bad guys"
“There’s the New Testament, the Old Testament, and the Sad Testament.”
— Rylan, explaining the parts of the Bible
“Mommy, you look like you should be in high school, not a mommy!”
— Mason, after spending the evening around high school girl babysitters at a parents' meeting at school
“Why’s Daddy driving? He’s the worst driver.”
— Rylan
“Why did you not stand on the scale?” (me)
“Cause I don’t like getting scaled.”
— Rylan
“The sun sort of embarrasses me...cause it’s so bright.”
— Ry
“If I fall, I’m grave.”
— Rylan, meaning "brave"
“Can you pack my snurkler?”
— Mason
“Do you wanna know why I want to come downstairs? Cause I love you so much!!!”
— Rylan
“If I feel like a penguin, I really do need goggles!”
— Ry
“Rylan, what are you doing?” (me- asking Rylan why he was trying to throw something tiny in the air)
”I’m throwing a ladyb—- no, not a ladybug! A booger!!”
— Rylan....loudly, while we were in Aldi

I love you three!!  Thanks for the cuddles and the laughs and the love.

Love, Mommy

January 2018 - Letters to Our Children

Mason, Rylan, and Elli,

I'm going to blame me being a week late in writing this on the fact that we have been spending all our time at the doctor's office this past month.   One of the nurses actually suggested that we start renting out a room in the office...yeah.  That bad.  So instead of the typical summary for the month, I'll try to make it short and sweet:

Ear infection (Elli), Strep Throat (Mason), Strep Throat (Rylan), Ear infection (Elli), Strep Throat (Rylan), Pink Eye (Elli), Ear infection (Elli- 3 appointments worth), Strep Throat (Mason).  Real life.  All of that was in December and this first week of January.

Besides that, we had a Christmas visit to PA and celebration of Uncle Levi's 30th birthday; a visit to Santa; a night driving around and looking at Christmas lights; 3 cookie making days at Nonni's; Awanastravaganza and the Awana leaders dinner; Christmas shopping; a Christmas visit from Grandma and Pap; a broken wrist, broken rib, and stapled head for Nonni; a Christmas Eve night at Nonni's house; Christmas day busyness including a lunch at Aunt Michele's; and a Spades party at Nonni's for New Years Eve.

Here's the quick kid update:

Elli-

you're still not walking, and the doctor wonders if all your ear infections are affecting your balance and even your speech (you mostly say "dada" for lots of things).  You are fast at climbing steps, though.  When you don't feel sick, you're happy and very cute...even though your hair is constantly a mess.  You love food and are still a better eater than the boys.  When you get thirsty at a meal, though, you refuse to eat until we figure out that that's what's wrong.  You still cry like a siren.  You LOVE going to sleep.  You get so excited when I pull out your swaddle or paci and blankie, and you almost always start laughing in happiness.

Rylan-

you like to make deals with us, you beg us to play cars or superheroes with you all day (Mason didn't do that at your age), and you still like to hear VBS songs at bedtime.  You are friends with the kitties; Kippa likes to come to your door when she hears you wake up and lays there until I open it.  You were quite the patient at the doctor this month.  You screamed, refused to be weighed, and threw a big fit.  Actually, when we went back for the 2nd strep diagnosis a couple weeks later, the nurse said, "Wow, that was 100 thousand times better than last time!"  We had to throw away your french fry paci after the last strep diagnosis, because I got scared that it was the culprit for reinfection.  You were hilarious, cute, and sweet when we threw it away.  You kept talking to it in the trash can, and you gave "French Fry" an empty bottle of juice to keep it company in the trash.  When you pray, it's one of the sweetest things ever.  You are full of joy, and you make all of us smile every day.

Mason-

you are starting to read words in real books!  It's both exciting and tiring for both of us.  You'd rather hear me read to you for the most part, but sometimes you seem motivated to practice on your own.  You are starting to write things, which is the cutest thing ever (like "I LUV MOME").  I also love your drawings so much.  In other news, you told me that you want to marry one of the girls in your class...so that happened quicker than expected!  You seem to like school still, although you didn't mind being off for Christmas break.

Here are our quotes for the month:

“A kiss might make my red spot not be so tricky- like Tiptwo is a tricky kitty.”
— Ry
“How about this deal?”
— Rylan...forever making deals
“I’ll just be in here practicing my monster noises.”
— Mason
“Do you forgive me for making me get hurt??”
— Rylan, while crying after he got hurt while being disobedient...and I wasn't being sympathetic
“I don’t WANT that! It’s not my favorite color!!”
— Rylan (constantly being picky about things that are not green)
“My pee is yellow cause I drinked lemonade!”
— Ry
“We did it! Without getting attacked by a bear!!”
— Rylan, after getting in the car in the dark
“What I’m in charge of is my money. I’m not in charge of you or Mason or Elli. Just my money. That’s the truth.”
— Rylan
“Can we watch the futures now?”
— Mason (referring to the special features of a movie)

Thanks for keeping me on my toes in 2017, guys.  I love you, little sweetnesses.

Love, Mommy
