September & October 2020 - Letters to Our Children

Mason, Rylan, and Elli,

We started out the month of August with our family vacation to Carolina Beach, NC. We didn’t go last year, so it was fun to be back.

Even with Covid, we got to go to one of the coolest churches we’ve been to there. It was outside at Kure Beach, beside the ocean.

We got in a big beach day that first full day at the beach. We went back for a night walk too. Some neighbors were putting off fireworks on the street when we got back.

We knew a hurricane was coming at the beginning of the trip. We got horrible alerts on our phones at 5 am Monday telling us to find somewhere safe to go. But all of Monday was nice, weather-wise. It was just cloudy. We mostly played in the pool that day. By suppertime it had started raining, and the owner had been by to help us tie some things down under the house just in case. We prepared for the storm, but since it was only a category 1, we didn’t expect much from it.  It ended up being much scarier than we anticipated. All of us except for Nonni tried running to the beach in the rain to see what it looked like around 8 pm (before it was super scary), but the wind was too powerful. Daddy ended up going by himself, but then when he got back, Mason, you decided to go with him again. As the two of you were gone, we got our second emergency alert on our phones, saying that there was a tornado warning and we needed to take cover immediately. That was very scary as we waited for the two of you, who were oblivious about the tornado warning, to get back. You came back safe and sound, though. The adults tried to watch a movie after you 3 went to bed to ignore the swaying of the house, but it kept getting worse, and then the power went out at 11. It stayed off until 5 am or so. But in the meantime, the house was shaking so bad that it felt like a cruise ship in very rough waters. All 3 of you woke up being very very scared around the time the power went out. Boys, you were already sleeping in your closet, and Elli was sleeping in hers… But we decided to move all 5 of us to Elli’s closet. It was VERY cramped, but shutting the door and putting our battery powered sound machine in there kept the sound down some…and everyone laying on top of each other helped us to sort of ignore all the other movement and terrible sounds. Eventually, maybe around 2:00, all of us besides Mason moved out of the closet and into the 2 beds in Elli’s room. I think we finally got some good sleep during that time, because the storm was mostly gone by then. The power came back on right before my phone died (which I was using as our secondary sound machine), so it didn’t even disturb anyone’s sleep at that point. Anyway, I think it was easily our biggest/scariest adventure on vacation so far. Oh and by the way, Nonni and Poppy decided to still sleep in their room on the 3rd floor which had the most movement and noise in the house. Crazy.

We went out and surveyed the damage of the area on Tuesday morning. Lots of shingles off, trees down, steps ripped off of the stairway to the beach, fences torn apart, and power was out on most of the island still for a long time. We were thankful to have power back so early.

We had another big beach morning the day after the hurricane. It was beautiful, and besides some damaged things, you’d never know that things were so crazy less the night before. Elli, you met your “best friend” on the beach- the little girl of a family from Pennsylvania. You played with her the whole time we were there. Later in the trip you were sad when you didn’t see her anymore. Rylan, you and Mason worked on skim boarding a lot of the time that we were on the beach this trip. Ry you did it more, and you got pretty good!

We had a harder time finding somewhere to eat Tuesday night, because a lot of places still didn’t have power. But we ended up eating at the restaurant right by the lake; we hadn’t been there before, but the food was really good and the people were nice.

Wednesday Daddy and I went to Wilmington for a couple hours to exchange something at a store there and then we walked around the riverwalk for a little bit. It was crazy hot, though, plus there was construction and things weren’t quite as nice as normal there, so we didn’t stay very long. Poppy wasn’t feeling good that day, but by the time we got back, he was feeling a little better.

Thursday morning, Mason, you went to play disc golf with Daddy and Poppy. Y’all were gone the whole morning, and you had a lot of fun. Nonni, Rylan, Elli, and I went to the beach. We found a spot down at Fort Fisher that was so empty and huge. After that, we got ice cream at a little shop on the main road that goes through Carolina/Kure/Fort Fisher. Nonni and I went out for coffee that afternoon during naps. We had a hard time finding somewhere that was open, but eventually we found somewhere to go and sat on the boardwalk while we drank our iced lattes.

Friday morning was our kayaking day. We got there early in the morning (not as early as first planned), but it was raining and they sent us back to wait out the rain. First we went to Fort Fisher and stayed in the pavilion place for a little while, but then it was clear that we were going to have to wait a lot longer. So we drove around some, then went back to the house and played some games and ate lunch. After that it was time to go back to the kayaks, and by then all the rain was gone. In the saddest part of the story, I took my big camera with me in the kayak in a gallon ziplock bag, and somehow water got in and ruined my camera. I still had my phone and waterproof camera with me, so I got some pictures of our kayaking trip, still. It was really fun aside from the camera situation. (And as a side note, thanks to insurance, I was able to replace my camera, and I also got an awesome little Fuji that I now love). We paddled out to the island that Daddy and Poppy had tried to run to one time, years ago. We got out at two places on the island. One stop was longer, where we waded and swam in the water. We also tried to catch crabs, found a shrimp and a dead fish, and used nets to try to catch anything else that was swimming.

Friday night we got pizza early, then went to the boardwalk to walk around and get dessert. Mason, you went inside to order for all of us at the gelato place, which was amazing. I typed up what we wanted on my phone, and you read it to the person inside. (I got a shot of espresso poured over gelato, with whipped cream on top. It was so good, and I forget what it’s called.)

The week after we got home, Daddy got to play in the final games for the softball season.

It was nice to get back to our regularly scheduled Saturday night family rests.

The night before the first day of school, we did “Brownie Baths” where I made brownies, and you boys got to eat them in the bath. I had heard someone do this as a day-before-school-starts routine, and it had always been in the back of my mind as a fun idea. You two loved it! Elli chose not to take a nap that afternoon and said she was “fine” with not having a brownie for her consequence, but when the time came, she was very sad about that decision.

You two were too cute on the first day of school. It went surprisingly well! We went to Daps for our yearly beginning-of-the-school-year tradition after school. That was yummy and fun. This year we’re carpooling with Mrs. Showalter and the Vaughns, which started a couple weeks into school, and that’s going well.

During the first full week of school, Elli and I had a planned fun day with Nichole, Harley, and Waylon. We went to Chiles Peach Orchard and did their kid program where you three made a craft, listened to some books, went to pick your own bag of apples, and then got an ice cream cone. It was really fun.

Meanwhile, Rylan wasn’t allowed to go to school because he had a sore throat for about an hour. That started the first of many days that he hasn’t been allowed to go to school so far this year. Covid has really made things complicated and frustrating. But aside from that, you two have loved school this year so far. You’re having fun with friends and enjoying what you’re learning. Rylan, you mostly talk about Atticus, and then you sing many of the songs you learn. Mason, you are loving the bird feeder outside your window at school, how Mrs. Riddle brought her dog one day, learning about the Revolutionary War, and hearing new books.

We went to Pennsylvania to see the old shop before it was completely torn down at the end of August. It ended up being a lot more torn down than I thought it would be when we were there, but you boys were able to help pull some stuff apart, which you loved.

To celebrate Elli’s birthday, we went to the new ice cream place in Stuarts Draft with Nonni and Poppy the night before her birthday. It was really yummy! Oh, and the day before your birthday, you taught yourself how to ride your bike!! (Have I mentioned that bike? Daddy found it for free and brought it home for you!) Since then you have become really good at riding all by yourself.

It’s always a little weird having birthdays on Sunday, but Elli, you opened your presents before church, and then we had a yummy meal at Nonni’s (you asked for “straight pasta” aka spaghetti), and you opened a few more presents there. From us, you got a princess crown, earrings, a pink princess phone, a key, and a pink car! You looked so adorable the whole day.

We worked on fixing your room this month, Elli. I finally found the bed I’d been looking for on FB Marketplace, and it was in Churchville! So we didn’t have to go nearly as far as I thought we would. After we got the bed, all the other steps moved really quickly, and we finished the whole room in a week! We painted it white, rearranged things, got rid of a LOT of things, and bought a couple finishing touches. All of us love being in your room now!

We got to have a park day with Nichole and her kids one day in September. It was in the middle of a 2 week unexpected break from school, also thanks to Covid.

We went back to Pennsylvania for a full weekend for Marion Days. Since there was no school and Daddy had a Sunday-Thursday route, we went earlier than usual on Friday. Before we left, we had to clean up the house a little extra, because Uncle Levi and Aunt Hilary were staying there for her sister Heidi’s wedding on Saturday night. This time in Pennsylvania, the old shop was gone, and there was a big hole in the ground. You boys also loved that, and you dug a sideways hole that you tried to climb in in there. Saturday was the Marion photo contest, Elli, you and I went on some errands with Grandma, and we even found Daddy some shoes at a shoe store sale. Over the time we were there, we also hung out with Dawson Aunt Mindy, Uncle Darrin, and Bailey. We went to the festival grounds for ice cream, a town picture, and watched the movie Overcomer. We stayed later on Sunday too, because I didn’t have to play the piano that week, and we weren’t going to life group. It was a nice long weekend.

When we put away the pool for the summer, we found a little frog that was pretty cute.

Mason, you went through a phase of doing your “exercises” every day- you would lift weights and mark the days off on a little calendar you made. Rylan sometimes did them with you.

Here are the quotes from the past couple months. They’re pretty Elli-heavy….she has been funny recently.

“I have sand on my hands. We need some baby powdered sugar.”
— Elli, at the beach (meaning baby powder)
“Are there lots of people at Lucy’s house?”
— Elli, being confused by the studio audience laughing on I Love Lucy
“It’s hot, but not scoldging hot.”
— Mason
“How did you wake up?’
’Cause the clock in my room said 4 o’clock.”
— me, and Elli, having a discussion about how she woke up so early (definitely not 4:00 though)
“Why nobody is answering Elli???”
— Elli, in her room at nap time
“Mommy, I’m 40 cents tall.”
— Elle Belle

I love you three!

July & August 2020 - Letters to Our Children

Elle, Ry, and Mase,

June and July. We had a vacation trip to WV and KY, some injuries (mostly with Mason- the biggest one shown below), teeth lost (both boys), a visit from Grandma in Harrisonburg, Rylan’s birthday and party, two dates for Mommy and Daddy, 4th of July celebrations, a Mommy/boys date to Waffle House, another redecoration in the house (entryway this time), life group meetings again, a spur of the moment Saturday evening driving to and from Fredericksburg for bike parts, swimming in our pool, softball games watching Daddy at Friendship Park, and lots of outside exploring. Oh AND a pacifier giving-up from Elli — she’s now paci free (plus one front tooth cavity that may or may not be thanks to said paci).

For our vacation, we spent one night at New River Gorge in West Virginia at an AirBnB house. Mason, you got your first dog bite, and now you think all dogs are evil (minus Leanne’s Nala and Aunt Heidi’s Mocha). We went hiking and Mason, you cried the entire time on the long hike except when we were at the top — that was before the dog bite. You did have a good time in general, but those were some lowlights.

We spent Tuesday - Sunday morning with Leanne’s family at their house. We didn’t see Leanne or Caleb much the first day and a half, because planting season was in full swing, but we did lots of things while we were there- including swimming, eating out, watching the documentary about their county/town, bike and dirt bike riding, playing in a field, exploring Abraham Lincoln’s childhood home place, other farm work, yummy meals at the house, and relaxing. The kids didn’t want us to leave- everyone had a good time.

We ate supper and then had ice cream in Harrisonburg with Grandma one Saturday.

Rylan, Mason shot your tooth out of your mouth with a nerf gun- we tied the string to the bullet and to your tooth, and Mason did the shooting.

Mason, you injured yourself the day before Rylan’s birthday- you were pogo sticking on wet deck steps and face planted onto the patio. You had a bad lip laceration inside your bottom lip, one on the outside of your top lip, and a big goose egg on your forehead. Later that week you also got a really bad case of swimmer’s ear. So that was a week of pain for you.

Rylan, one of your favorite presents from your birthday was Super Penguin - Nonni’s felting creation for you. You love him. Also, Mason made those decorations AND that crown for your birthday!

It was raining for your birthday party, Ry, so Aunt Michele and Uncle Wesley couldn’t stay. They stayed long enough for you to open your presents, though. Then we went inside and had nachos and hot dogs and dirt for dessert. Grandma stayed Friday night and Saturday night for that weekend, and Pap stayed Saturday.

Daddy played softball this year for the church softball team. It ended up being a lot of fun for all of us- I didn’t take many pictures, though. You three mostly loved the sand pits, the other kids, the playground, and riding your bikes. The four of us even went to a few games when Daddy couldn’t go because of work!

Mommy and Daddy got an anniversary date in Waynesboro and in July we got another date where we went to Winchester (and Mommy almost overheated …..at least it felt like it- I can’t remember the last time I felt that bad because of heat.)

Our remodeled entryway! The painting got a little scary up near the top but we did it ourselves! Mr. Larry helped us hang the new light.

How much do you think the mail lady loved coming up to our porch where a bloody, dead snake was laying on a ramp??

Mason, you did a lot of work in our woods, cutting down trees and making a bike path.

Elli, you love the Jaguar, and I’ve probably mentioned it before, but you’ve been asking for a pink car for months now. Also, before I forget to mention it, you are so sensitive and kind. And I wonder if your main love language will be physical touch, because you are so sweet- rubbing my back or arm or giving Daddy a kiss when he smiles at you. It’s so nice.

Mason, you got stung by a yellow jacket twice on the hand. Your hand swelled up like a balloon and stayed that way for a couple days.

We had a fourth of July celebration with a few families from our life group at the Tyler’s house. Food, trampolines, and whiffle ball.

We rushed home from there to Chad’s house, so we could watch him set up fireworks in our front yard. That was pretty cool!

When Nonni took Elli for a date day, the boys and I got to go to Waffle House. Elli, you and Nonni started to crash our date there, but then you switched to Golden Corral. For several weeks you couldn’t stop talking about the chocolate fountain.

Harley and Waylon came to play one day. You made a fort together with Rylan’s present from Aunt Courtney, and you played games in the pool.

The restaurant we ate at in Fredericksburg was really good! We watched Little House on the Prairie in the car on the way home so our Shabbat still felt a little celebrated.

Here is the round up of quotes from June and July!

“Why does Daddy care so much about hair? It’s tasteless!”
— Mason, as Josh complained about cat hair getting in his food
“Rylan was acting like a TEAR artist!!”
— Mason, meaning "terrorist"
“Rylan, that’s called sarcasm.”
”You man mason-casm? It’s sarcasm, except Mason said it.”
— Me, then Ry
“Daddy, do you want to hear my dreams?? First do you want to hear season 1, season 2, season 3, or season 4?”
”Season 1.”
”Oh, sorry. Season 1 is not available.”
— Rylan and Josh
“You can’t read the future. You’re not a foreign teller!”
— Mason
“Rylan, doesn’t it smell a little bit like Pennsylvania?”
— Mason, after walking into the post office
“Vulture two, low!!!”
— all 3 kids every time they see a vulture (the number changes depending on how many birds there are)
“Mommy, I have ideas to make things out of useless junk.”
— Rylan
“Where did I get my cup?”
”At the hospital.”
”What kind of hospital? Did I die?”
— Elli and Mason, talking about her pink cup she got when she got tubes put in her ears

Ok! That’s a wrap! I love you!

Love, Mommy

May & June 2020 - Letters to Our Children

Mason, Rylan, & Elli

April and May sort of blended together this year, thanks to the Coronavirus. So we’re going to do another 2 month recap this time. General overview — we were mostly just at home for the whole time. Occasional trips to the store (mostly just me and Elli) and going to Nonni and Poppy’s on Sundays…. and then by the end of May, you’ll see we were able to get out a little more. But the majority of this time was spent at home.

First, we finished the redecorating in the office. I might have mentioned this last month, but it was perfect timing for me to choose this room in the Cozy Minimalist Community to work on, because we ended up needing to use it for school, and it was SO nice that it became such a cozy space to be in. The fan proved to be a pain point in getting it installed, but after 10 million hours and help from Jimmy on FaceTime, we finally got it up!

I had my 34th birthday pretty close to the beginning of all of the quarantine. It was on a Sunday, so there was online church, then a super yummy lunch at Nonni and Poppy’s. We got to play games and take a walk. It was nice. Plus in the morning, all three of you blew up lots and lots of balloons for me in the living room. That was a fun birthday touch. Another random note- I did lots of jump roping in April and May too. Almost every day for maybe 6 weeks.

Easter was the next Sunday. I took some pictures because Elli, you had such a beautiful Easter dress you got for Christmas and no one was going to get to see it now- so we needed to capture the cuteness. Nonni hid some Easter baskets for the 3 of you at her house, and you dyed eggs together later in the day.

Mason you started having weekly Zoom calls with your class around mid-April. You loved seeing your friends and getting to show them Tiptwo.

Mase, you had the next quarantine birthday. You had donuts in the morning, a surprise of the bike you’d been asking about so often since looking at it at Pastor Don’s house, and then supper with Nonni and Poppy coming over. We also watched some of the Grace auction live event thing on FB that night. And you did some thumb wrestling and noodle fights with Poppy and Nonni to end the night.

We’ve had more time to play games on Sundays, and one week you three even made a little play for the adults to watch.

We had one really nice bike ride/ family walk evening. (To be clear, Daddy has been working very full time through the COVID-19 stuff. No extra home time for him; that’s why we haven’t gotten to do this more often). Elli you even rode on Ry’s little dirt bike some with Daddy and sometimes Mason helping!

Rylan, you loved your Zoom calls with Mrs. McConnell, and you had them 3 times a week mostly throughout the whole homeschooling time. When the whole class was on, you would hide at least half of the time, and very often you wanted to put your microphone on mute. And Mrs. McConnell even set up a separate reading group time so you and Atticus could read together instead of being in your bigger reading group. You ended Kindergarten really well. I think school comes easily to you, Bud.

The church did a family challenge each week that we occasionally participated in. Most of the time we didn’t have enough time to do it with Daddy, because they were supposed to be finished by Saturday night, and that’s the only day we had to do it with him. But the two main ones we did in April and May were the family obstacle course (which we won!) and the recreation of a famous picture. We did two for that- one with Nonni and one with Elli. It was really fun for me to do, but I probably spent way too much time on it. But again…it was fun. We had some other ideas picked out to do with you boys, but we didn’t end up having enough time. Grandma and Pap came to visit the Friday night and Saturday before this photo challenge, so Grandma helped us with the picture of Elli.

Several weeks we were able to get out and take walks on Sundays. We also played games outside a couple weeks like football and hillbilly golf. Also, for a couple Sundays there were baby birds at Nonni’s. They were so cute hopping around the yard.

Homeschooling was definitely not always fun. Certain things were really stressful for each of you, and we had lots of breakdowns. Surprisingly, Mason, in a time capsule that you had to fill out in the last couple weeks of school, you said your favorite thing about this year was homeschooling. So…surprise to me! Our tradition that all of you loved was that every Wednesday after we would go return/pick up school work, we would go to a fast food place to get food and a milkshake. I think it gave all of us some excitement that we needed to get through those weeks. Also you had to finish the end of your school work for that day in the car before we got the milkshake. So it was a win-win. On the last Wednesday, there was a drive-through goodbye at school where you got to see your teachers and wave out the window.

We were outside a lot those 2 months. There was lots of playing in the stream time. Harley and Waylon came to play one day and y’all spent almost the whole time at the stream. During part of it you were carrying buckets full of hot water from our bathtub into the “pool” area of the stream to make it a warm pool.

Ry, Daddy took off a Friday for you in May when school was done so that you could do Daddy Donut Day. We bought donuts at the grocery store, since all the real donut places were still closed, and you made a robot and a car with Daddy out of all the trash we’d collected. I think you had a good time. Mason shared the day with you some, but we made sure you got one-on-one time with Daddy for it.

During those two months, church moved from online, to in the parking lot (in our cars), to on the front lawn. We also started watching church services from Newspring in South Carolina after Katherine sent me a song that their music people did on Easter. You 3 love their kids lessons, and we really like the adult service too.

One Wednesday morning in May, we got to go to Zeuss to watch a movie in an essentially empty theater. It was 8 kids (including you 3) plus me and Miss Summer. You boys picked the seats at the very top for us to sit. We watched Bolt, and everyone loved it. You also each got your OWN bag of popcorn and your OWN drink. You’ll most likely never have that experience again - it was crazy and fun. (One crazy addition is that I decided to start trying intermittent fasting the day before this…so I had to sit for almost the first hour in our seats with a bag of popcorn in my lap- without eating it- until my “window” opened. Then I ate the whole thing! Haha!)

Church on the lawn has been sometimes hot and sometimes cold. But it’s been fun to be outside.

One week at Nonni’s we had a cherry seed spitting contest. I don’t know who won. It wasn’t me. And yes, that is a picture of Poppy trying to spit a seed on my head.

We spent one morning picking strawberries at the little place on 340 that we’ve bought produce from. We’ve never picked strawberries before there though. As usual, by the time we were halfway through picking, it was super hot. But all of you did pretty well, especially you, Mason! Afterwards Nonni took you and Rylan for your end of school celebration, and I capped and sliced and froze berries, plus made some freezer jam.

One other new thing y’all started doing at Nonni and Poppy’s house was playing basketball at the Robb’s. It was definitely a favorite activity on Sundays. One Sunday you also tried playing street hockey on the side street.

Here are the quotes from these two months!

“Is Daddy your running friend?”
”I’m talking about my running friends that are old.”
”Like Uncle Ian?”
— a conversation between between the boys and Poppy
“Do you think there are any robbers that don’t like broccoli?”
— Mason (very obsessed with stopping robbers/bad guys with unusual methods)
“Who would you rather marry? Laura or Mary?”
”Neither....But if it was a life or death situation, I’d choose to die.”
— Poppy/Mason conversation about the Ingalls family
“Daddy, everyone probably thinks that you’re fat. I’m probably the only one that doesn’t. But I 100% don’t think that you are.”
— Rylan, in a very sweet voice
“Mommy, me getting so big, but you not letting me drive still!!”
— Elli, being very frustrated about not being able to drive the van yet
“I’m surprised that bugs don’t fly and die into my shin.”
— Ry
“Let’s have broccoli.”
”No not broccoli!”
”What vegetable do you want?”
”Macaroni and cheese!”
”That’s not a vegetable.”
”Ramen.”
— Me/Elli conversation
“You’ll look weird in a mask, Mommy. So I’m never going into the store with you until they change that law.”
— Mason

Elli, here are some words that you say that are really funny: “lindo” = window, “mife” = knife, “roon” = room, and “cacroni” = macaroni. You also still love the “wrap you up in a blanket” song (you call it “The Wrapping Song”) and the “I love you _____” song that you sing to everyone in the family spontaneously when you feel overcome with happiness. Mason, like I mentioned in the quotes, you LOVE talking and thinking about how to stop bad guys with things like paintball guns and food. You always have plans where you’d be very sneaky and fast and cause the robber to be in shock. Rylan, you are having a lot of fun playing with Mason recently. Not all has been harmless though; one time we were in an almost-call-the-fire-department situation. In the woods behind the house. Yeah. Not cool. Thankfully I think the two of you learned your lesson on that one and were rightfully scared.

Oh! And we got a pool! Just a cheap (I mean, as cheap as a 14’ one can be) one from Big Lots with the hope that it will last us one summer while the public pools are closed. We started it in the side yard, but it collapsed after a few days because it wasn’t level. So we moved it to the patio, where it has been very sturdy ever since.

I finally got to go on my birthday shopping trip with Nonni in May when stores opened back up! We got a lot of good deals at Ross, Target, and Walmart, so I have a fun summer wardrobe now.

Nonni and Poppy came over for a Mother’s Day dinner where I made NY style pizza AND pan pizza. I was very happy because this month I finally found a round pan pizza crust recipe (one I’d made before, just not in round pans) that worked really well!

Daddy did some work on the bike course in the back yard - that’s where we did the obstacle course for church. He used Mr. Larry’s tractor to make all the hills and jumps the way he wanted them.

On the first day of mandatory mask wearing from per governor’s orders, Daddy went to the store with an Ironman mask on. It made me and Mason very happy and laugh a lot. Surprisingly, he said there wasn’t much response from others in the store. He said the the person working at the gas station had no reaction at all. Ha.

One day during quarantine Aunt RuthE called and read some books to the three of you on FaceTime! That was a fun surprise. You got to see Grandma Sollenberger on there too. :)

Ok, I hope that explains most of the randomness in these pictures. I love you so much!

Love you, Mommy
